Get Involved

Join a Garden

We advise you to spend time walking around your neighborhood (or the one you'd like to garden in) and checking out existing gardens. Make note of their names, locations, open hours and public event postings. You can also visit GardenMaps and locate gardens using their interactive mapping system.

Visit the garden during open hours or an event. Introduce yourself to gardeners and ask about the process of being involved with that space – it could be joining a core garden group or specific sub committees, signing up for a bed on a waiting list, or hosting open hours. Each garden is unique in how it is organized and run and the membership process reflects that. Overall, it requires patience and willingness to learn from citizen volunteers that have been stewarding gardens over the last 30 years.

You can also call our office at (212) 788-8070 or email us and we will be happy to give you contact information.

Volunteer

To volunteer, find a community garden or farmers market in your neighborhood, contact them directly, and find out what help they need. GreenThumb can provide you with contact information.

Additionally, the Mayor’s office has a website strictly devoted to volunteering. Visit the NYC Service website to search for community gardens looking for volunteers.

If you are a corporate or large group, contact Partnerships for Parks for more information.
